Family seeks petition to get crossing gates after South Shore accident

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The family of a man killed at a St. Joseph County railroad crossing is trying to get gates put up.

Last month, 22-year-old Ryan Voreis was killed by a South Shore train.

There was no crossing gate at the intersection.

Monday, friends and family members gathered at the Hacienda Restaurant on Portage Road in South Bend trying to get signatures.

"There's just a lot of confusion right there," said Josh Voreis, the brother of Ryan Voreis. " We are trying to get arms put there so we can save another person's life from doing the exact same thing.  One death is just enough to put something up there."

The train was going about 70 miles an hour when it hit Voreis' car.
