Jefferson and S. 26th in South Bend reopens following fatal crash
South Bend Police say the crash that happened at Jefferson Boulevard and S. 26th Street Thursday was fatal.
South Bend Police Department said that a 90 year-old driver was traveling westbound in a 2005 Buick LeSabre on Jefferson Blvd with his 85 year-old wife in the passenger seat.
While turning left, his car was struck by a 57 year-old woman driving a 2013 Chrysler that was travelling eastbound on Jefferson Blvd.
The LeSabre driver was taken to Memorial Hospital and is currently in the ICU.
The wife of the LeSabre driver was pronounced dead.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated and names are being withheld pending family notification.
The intersection was shut down while St. Joseph County FACT investigated the crash and cleaned up the scene.
The intersection reopened just after 5 p.m.
Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
