Fatal crash on US 421 in La Porte County
LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. - La Porte County Deputies were dispatched to US 421 and CR 125 South for a three-vehicle crash just after 11 a.m. Sunday.
Officials say their investigation revealed a Jeep, driven by 34-year-old South Bend woman, was traveling north on US 421.
A semi-truck, driven by a 50-year-old Knox man, was traveling south on US 421.
Documents state the semi and Jeep collided first. Following the initial crash, the semi drove left of center and collided head-on with a northbound vehicle, an SUV.
The Jeep's driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the initial crash.
The semi's driver refused treatment at the scene.
The driver of the SUV was airlifted from the scene to a regional hospital. Deputies later learned the driver passed away due to injuries sustained in the crash.
A passenger riding in the SUV was transported from the scene to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the crash.
Members of the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team responded to the scene due to the complexity of the crash. Toxicology test results are pending.
The identities of the occupants of the SUV are being withheld pending next of kin notification.
