Fatal crash results in I-74 lane closure
SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. -- Emergency crews were called to a fatal crash just after 5:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Crews responded to the crash on I-74 eastbound near the 119 mile marker in Shelby County.
On arrival, first responders discovered a semi tractor-trailer flipped onto its side along a tree line just south of the roadway.
The semi driver was pronounced dead on the scene.
An additional vehicle discovered at the scene had received rear-end damage. The driver unharmed.
Crash Reconstructionists with ISP were called to the scene to investigate.
According to investigators, the passenger car was traveling in the left lane and had gotten a flat tire just before the collision.
A semi was traveling eastbound in the right lane when the passenger car allegedly moved into its path.
According to officials, the semi driver attempted to move evasively to the right lane when it struck the right rear of the vehicle, running off the road and flipping on its side.
Invesitagors believe the driver of the semi died on impact.
Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors at this time.
The right lane of I-74 is closed as crews work to clear the wreck.
The identity of the semi driver is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
