Nappanee police K9 assists in arrest of attempted murder suspect
NILES, Mich. -- A man and his daughter were found dead in their home in the 600 block of Woodruff Street Wednesday night, according to Niles Police.
A neighbor who hadn't seen them in a while contacted police to perform a welfare check.
When officers arrived to the home, the door was locked, but an officer could see a man in the home who was 'down.'
Officers entered the home and found the bodies of the man in his 80s and a woman in her 50s. Police said they were a father and daughter.
The house was cold, but the furnace was not running. There was gas and the pilot light was on.
When firefighters arrived, they tested for carbon monoxide but tests didn't indicate high levels.
Police said there is no reason to believe their deaths were a result of foul play or a crime. There is also no evidence of self-inflicted injuries.
Autopsies will be conducted this weekend or early next week.
Although the victims have been identified, police are withholding their identities pending notification of next of kin.
