SEATTLE -- In an incredibly rare reversal of a red-card suspension, FIFA has confirmed that Folarin Balogun will be available to play with the U.S. Team against Belgium in the Round 16 match on Monday.
The 25-year-old striker will be available to face Belgium, despite his red card in the U.S.'s previous game.
He had received a one-game red-card ban during a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday for a foul on defender Tarik Muharemovic, a sanction which is automatically accompanied by a one-game suspension under Article 10.5 of FIFA’s rules for the tournament.
Multiple FIFA officials confirmed after that match that a team is not able to appeal against a red card or the subsequent suspension.
The new statement from FIFA reads:
“In line with article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year.
If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”
U.S. Soccer said it “accepted” and was “pleased” with the decision. “Our full attention is focused on the round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans,” it added in a statement.
