Fighting Irish in Rio

The Olympics officially get underway in Rio on Friday and there’ll be no shortage of familiar faces.

Twelve former Fighting Irish student athletes, representing four different countries, will be part of this year’s games.

In basketball, Natalie Achonwa, a current player for the WNBA’s Indiana Fever, is making her second straight appearance at the Olympics, where she’ll play for Canada.

Another familiar Notre Dame Basketball name is Monty Williams.

The former NBA first round pick and head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans became an assistant coach for team USA in 2013.

Four-time All-American Amanda Polk will represent the United States as part of USA’s women’s eight boat.
