ELKHART, Ind. -- Forest River plant 59 on CR 15 was heavily damaged by fire Tuesday afternoon. Employees reported hearing explosions as they evacuated.

Firefighters were called to plant 59 around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

When they arrived, dark smoke was billowing from the building. The smoke could be seen from several miles away.

"Upon arrival, they found fire through the roof and started defensive operations. There was 5-6 employees still on scene who reported no injuries. Everybody was out and they heard explosions, popping explosions, when they called 911," said Elkhart Fire Chief Chad Carey.

Firefighters were putting out hot spots at 6:30 p.m., but the fire was mostly under control.

There were only approximately 5 or 6 employees in the building at the time.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters say the building is a total loss.
