SOUTH BEND, Ind. - One firefighter was injured in a fire on Bertrand Street Monday morning.

The South Bend Fire Department responded to the call in the 2200 block at 3:06 a.m.

Officials say the fire started in the basement before engulfing the second floor, which eventually collapsed in the fire.

The injured firefighter was transported to a local hospital and is expected to be okay.

No one was in the house when the fire occurred.

At 8:15 a.m., firefighters returned to the home to extinguish a rekindle of the fire.

Later Monday, firefighters responded to another fire in the city, this time in the 700 block of S. 25th St.

One resident was trapped in the house but was able to break a window and get out with the help of bystanders.

Two other animals that were trapped inside were rescued without severe injuries.

The cause of both fires is still under investigation.
