Firefighter injured in North River Landing Apartment Fire

ABC 57

ELKHART, Ind. --  Friday evening, multiple agencies responded to a serious structure fire in the North River Landing Apartments at the 23000 block of W. Lexington.

The call came in at 7:38 p.m. Upon arrival, crews arrived at a three-story wood frame structure with smoke showing from the roof.  Rescue 1, Truck 18, and Medic 24 searched the inside for any occupants or pets that may have been inside. The flames were located in the space between the second floor and the roof.

The fire turned defensive shortly after, and crews were pulled out of the building due to the growing fire in the attic space.  Multiple aerial trucks were used to fight the fire. Baugo, Cleveland, and Oslo Fire Departments were also called to assist with the fire.

One firefighter was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for heat-related illness; they were treated and released. The Red Cross was also called to assist with the occupants of the building who were displaced due to the fire.

Once the fire was brought under control, the scene was secured, and all units cleared the scene.

The fire remains under investigation.
