Five candidates to participate in public forum for Director of Community Police Review Board

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Common Council released the names of the five candidates who will participate in a public forum for the position of Director of the Community Police Review Board Office.

Candidates Stephanie Ball, Charles L. King, Randy Peppers, Julius Rhodes and Matt Topelian will participate in Monday night's forum, which is the final interview round for the job.

Each of the candidates will speak individually to the forum, without other candidates present, taking seven minutes to introduce themselves and share the goals they have for the office.

Forum facilitators will then ask the candidates the same list of questions. These facilitators include a moderator, a city human resources representative, and the council attorney or council president.

After all candidates have spoken, community members will have time to share their thoughts on each candidate.

Any resident who wants to speak will have three minutes to share comments.

Once all have spoken, facilitators will give residents a second comment time of two minutes.

The council will then offer their opinions of the candidates.

After that, the Council President, Vice President, immediate past Council President and the Chair of the Health & Public Safety Committee will have a closed-door meeting to file a Recommendation Resolution to Mayor James Mueller, as required by City Ordinance.

The resolution cannot include more than three applicants for the mayor to choose from. The resolution will be considered at the next council meeting.

Mayor Mueller will ultimately choose one of the three recommended applicants for the position.

Monday night's forum will be held at 7 p.m. in Ballroom A of the St. Joseph County Public Library.

Those who cannot make it to the forum in person can join the virtual screening of the meeting by following the attached link. The meeting will use the Microsoft Teams Meeting app.
