Five minors shot in South Bend since March
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Another child becomes a victim of gun violence in South Bend.
Audio from dispatch obtained by ABC57 reveals the moment operators got the call, saying “We have a baby that’s been shot in the head.”
Tuesday’s shooting happening on Amhurst Ave. off Miami St. on the city’s south side. South Bend Police and the Violent Crimes Unit investigated the scene for more than five hours.
“They are very trained in having a methodical process to try to piece together exactly what happened to make sure that if there is somebody to claim, they are held accountable,” says Ashley O’Chap, Public Information Officer with the South Bend Police Department.
The latest details from officials are limited; unable to confirm whether or not the suspect is in custody, but police assure there is no ongoing threat to the public.
SBPD has not yet been able to confirm the victim’s age and how bad their injuries are.
Neighbors in the area say they were shocked to see the scene, saying situations like this are not common for their typically quiet neighborhood.
Unfortunately, shootings involving children are becoming more common in South Bend though.
The last instance where a minor was shot was just three weeks ago on July 25th, and although that victim is stable, three more children have been shot and killed since March.
Two of the suspects involved in the other four shootings involving minors are now in custody, but the investigations continue for at least two of them, including Tuesday’s shooting.
