Food Bank of Northern Indiana gets a 470-pound pork donation from 4-H and the St. Joseph County Farm Bureau

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Wednesday, cars were lined up at the Food Bank of Northern Indiana waiting to get their groceries, but what people might not have expected was to get a pound of pork added in. 

The pounds of pork were donated by the St. Joseph County Farm Bureau to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana.  The pork came from the St. Joseph County Fair, but more specifically from the auction that 4-H hosts at its fairs. Four pigs were bought; the Farm Bureau purchased and donated two of the pigs to the food bank, and the other two were purchased by the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. 

Three out of the four pigs were 4-H participants' livestock. Dylan Stump first got his pigs back in February and raised them at his house, getting them ready for the fair. Stump was one of the five kids at the donation who was able to see the benefits of this donation. 

“Today we are distributing this processed meat from one of my pigs to people who need food,” Stump said.

The president of the St. Joseph County Farm Bureau, James Kemble, says there is a protein insecurity, and donating the pigs, it creates an opportunity to give back. 

“But for somebody who is maybe food insecure, it's an opportunity for them to get something that they might not normally have,” Kemble said. 

In total, they donated over 470lbs of pork to the food bank, with the 4-H kids and the Farm Bureau there to help pack up some of the groceries, knowing that their product was going to help benefit others. 

“Feel good that we are making an impact in the community,” Stump said.
