Six dead in house fire near Logansport

NOW: Six dead in house fire near Logansport

LOGANSPORT, Ind. - The bodies of six people have been recovered from a home in a rural area just outside Logansport, 70 miles southwest of South Bend.

The fire was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived to the home, approximately 6 or 7 minutes after the initial 9-1-1 call from a neighbor around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The first two people at the scene were deputies with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department. They attempted to enter the home through the second story, but flames and smoke pushed them back.

One of the deputies suffered smoke inhalation but refused treatment at the scene.

The two people who escaped were taken to the hospital for treatment. The sheriff's department says they have spoken with investigators but did not know how much information they were able to provide.

The bodies of two adults and two children have been recovered from the house.

The search for two children believed to be missing has been difficult because of the destruction from the fire and the collapse of the second floor.

The Cass County Sheriff's Department, Logansport Police, Indiana State Police and the State Fire Marshal are all investigating. They will likely be on scene through at least Thursday.

The fire marshal did not know whether the home had smoke detectors but said having working smoke detectors are the best chance you have for survival.
