Four high schoolers chosen for 2023 Lilly Endowment

From L-R: Leon, VanDriessche, Wang, and Yu

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - Four St. Joseph County high school students were selected as 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars. The students come from Penn, Riley, and Washington high schools.

Scholarships were offered to Jennifer Leon from Washington High School, Cooper VanDriessche from Riley High School, Zichu Wang from Penn High School, and Allison Yu from Penn High School.

Lilly scholarships cover full tuition, required fees, and offer a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and equipment needed for four years of undergraduate study.

The scholarship applies only to eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit colleges or universities.

Recipients must be attending school full-time.

The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County received 90 applications for the scholarship from 11 schools this year.

Final nominees were submitted to the statewide administrator of the program for selection.

Recipients were chosen based on academic excellence, leadership, community service, under-representation, and more.

Since its inception in 1997, the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program has covered more than $486 million in tuition.

More than 5,000 Indiana students have received the scholarship.
