Four hurt in Elkhart County dog attack

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -  Four people were hurt and a man was arrested following a dog attack in Elkhart County Monday.

Police say they responded to reports of two dogs attacking several people in the area of Melrose Place and Green Valley Parkway in Dunlap.

They say a 79-year-old woman was walking her leashed dog when two Staffordshire Bull Terriers attacked. 

People nearby tried to help but were unable to stop the attack and they were bitten by the vicious dogs.

Officers on the scene say the dogs were so aggressive they had to shoot them both. One died and the other was taken to the Elkhart County Humane Society for treatment.

The 79-year-old woman and a man who tried to help her were taken to the hospital with serious wounds to their backs and legs.

Two others suffered bites,but declined further medical treatment.

Deputies later determined that the owner of the dogs is Hector Valdez of Elkhart.

He weas taken into custody for two counts of harboring a non-immunized dog.
