Free smoke detectors donated

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. - A Berrien County company that restores fire-damaged homes is helping to keep them from burning.

ServPro of Berrien County donated 150 smoke detectors Tuesday to the Benton Harbor Fire Department.

October is ‘Fire Protection Month’ at the department. All month long Benton Harbor will be giving out smoke detectors and installing them for free.

“A lot of homes we go into don’t have any. The batteries have gone dead. They pull them out so they stop chirping at them,” says Jeremy Connell with the Benton Harbor Fire Department.

This is the fourth year ServPro has donated detectors during October. The company is giving away 500 more in the county.
