Gary man arrested in Michigan City after damaging police car during arrest

ABC 57

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. - The Indiana State Police report on Sunday, April 21, around 8:50 p.m., a trooper on patrol in Michigan City performed a traffic stop on a tan 2004 Cadillac Escalade for an expired license plate.

Documents state the trooper then identified the driver and passenger.

The passenger was identified as 19-year-old Nadan Stallings of Gary.

During the traffic stop, it was determined that Stallings had an active warrant in La Porte County for Criminal Mischief.

Stallings was then handcuffed and placed in the front seat of the trooper's patrol car.

While the trooper was attempting to fasten the seatbelt around Stallings, he stated that he would not wear the seatbelt.

Authorities say Stallings continued to yell vulgarities at officers on scene, while also physically refusing to be safely secured in the police car.

Stallings became so combative that he began to kick the windshield of the police car, causing extensive damage.

A Michigan City Police transport vehicle was requested and eventually authorities were able to transport Stallings to the Michigan City Police Department.

Officials say at the police department, Stallings continued to resist arrest, battering an officer before eventually being transported to the La Porte County Jail for booking.

Stallings' preliminary charges include Battery on a Public Safety Official, a level six felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, a class A misdemeanor, Criminal Mischief, a class B misdemeanor, Disorderly conduct, a class B misdemeanor, Possession of Marijuana, class B misdemeanor, and Possession of Paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor.

Final charges will be determined by the La Porte County Prosecutor.

The driver was cited and released from the scene.
