Girl Scouts in Michiana receive $24,000 donation

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Girl Scouts from Northern Indiana-Michiana just received a sizable donation from 1st Source Bank.

Allen, St. Joseph, and Elkhart counties were given a donation of $24,000 in order to help with a Staff-Led Troop program.

The donation came after the bank acknowledged the difficulty of finding troop leaders for the 480 Girl Scouts in that area.

While most troops are led by parents of the girls, that traditional model has become less popular over the years due to limited family budgets and single parent family homes.

According to the Girl Scouts of America, low-income families are not always able to lend their time to being troop leaders and the Staff-Led program will help with that shortfall.

“We’re delighted that 1st Source stepped in to support this initiative,” says Sharon Pohly, CEO of Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana. “Our mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place, and to fulfill that mission, we need to adapt to meet girls’ needs in a changing cultural environment. It’s gratifying that 1st Source recognizes the impact this program will have and values it with this generous contribution.”
