Gov. Daniels named Purdue University's next president

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- It's official! Gov. Mitch Daniels will be Purdue University's next president.

The Board of Trustees voted on Thursday morning and the decision was unanimous.

Then the fight song played and Daniels joined the board on stage.

Minutes after the vote, the 63-year-old governor clapped along with the fight song.

Daniels wore a tie with Purdue's black and gold school colors that he joked he didn't buy last night, but was a present from former Purdue President Martin Jischke seven years ago.

Daniels acknowledged that his credentials are different from the typical leader of a large university but emphasized that he's spent much of his life trying to learn from those in academia.

Daniels will start his new job after his term as governor ends in January.
