INDIANAPOLIS -- The governor of Indiana is pushing for the state to receive federal help following this week's severe weather.

In a new release, Gov. Mike Braun said he requested a Presidential Emergency Declaration through FEMA to bring additional federal resources to assist in recovery from the derecho and other severe weather that began August 11.

The governor's office says the declaration would provide assistance for emergency response costs. This could include water rescues, power restoration, and other immediate support responses.

“I will do everything in my power to protect Hoosier lives and livelihoods as we respond to this historic severe weather," said Gov. Braun. "I have mobilized state and local resources, declared a Statewide Disaster Emergency and deployed the Indiana National Guard. Now, I am requesting immediate federal assistance to strengthen those efforts and provide direct assistance to impacted communities.”

The governor says state emergency officials and the Indiana National Guard remain mobilized.
