Grand jury indicts driver on reckless homicide charges for fatal crash

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. -- A Nebraska truck driver was indicted by a grand jury in connection with a four vehicle crash that killed a Bremen woman, according to court records.

Delbert Ray Polenske was indicted on charges of reckless homicide and criminal recklessness.

Around 5:15 p.m. on February 15, Polenske was driving east on US 6 approaching King Road when his semi struck the rear of Melia Byrer's Ford Focus, according to the Marshall County Sheriff's Office.

The force of the crash pushed Byrer's vehicle into oncoming traffic where it was struck by two other vehicles.

Byrer was taken to the hospital but died of her injuries.

Polenske will be in court on August 24 for an initial hearing.
