Granger man pronounced dead after multi-vehicle crash in Elkhart County

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash involving multiple vehicles that happened around 6 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Old US Highway 33 and County Road 3.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a red Hyundai Elantra was driving eastbound on Old US Highway 33 in the direction of County Road 3.

Another vehicle, a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was also driving eastbound on Old US Highway 33 directly behind the Hyundai.

A third vehicle, a 2020 Chevrolet Colorado, was heading westbound on Old US Highway 33 in the direction of the intersection with County Road 3.

The Jeep was driving too closely behind the red Hyundai. When the Hyundai attempted to slow down and stop, the Jeep rear-ended it and sent it into the westbound lane.

The Chevrolet Colorado then crashed into the Hyundai in a near head-on collision.

Officials confirmed that the driver of the Hyundai, 66-year-old John Levy of Granger, was transported to Elkhart General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Jeep, 22-year-old Cody Nemec, was treated at the scene by paramedics for a head laceration.

The driver of the Chevrolet Colorado did sustain any injuries.
