Granger resident Joe Donnelly resigns as U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican

VATICAN CITY -- Former Indiana Senator and Representative Joe Donnelly is stepping down from his most recent position as Ambassador to the Vatican.

In a post on X, formally known as Twitter, Donnelly says he will leave his position at the Vatican and return home to Indiana on July 8th. He is originally from Granger where he still keeps a home.

Donnelly served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and one term in the Senate.

President Joe Biden nominated Donnelly for U.S. Ambassador to the holy city in late 2021, and the Senate confirmed him in January of 2022.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to serve my country in this unique way," Donnelly said.

There are questions about whether the long-time democrat could wind up running for office again here in Indiana, maybe even as soon as this year, but the Indiana democratic party today told ABC57 News there are no such plans currently in place.
