Group gathers outside St. Joseph County Courthouse for 'Equal Pay Day'

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- There was a sea of red outside the St. Joseph County courthouse in South Bend on Tuesday.

Several womens groups gathered to raise awareness for "Equal Pay Day".

The red symbolizes that women and minorities are still in the red with their pay.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, for every dollar a man makes, women are paid $0.77.

The gap is unsettling, especially for those ready to enter the workforce.

"As a senior, I'm going to be graduating soon.  So, this is affecting the women who I'm graduating with and affects the men and women who we interact with daily here in South Bend.  It's greater than an issue college students will face it's an equity issue," said Cat Cleary, a student at Saint Mary's College.

Several men -- including Mayor Pete Buttigieg -- also attended the event.

Organizers said that was nice to see, as this issue affects everyone.
