GOSHEN, Ind.-- After 50 years, a beloved Goshen barber is closing up shop. Doug's Sports Cuts is officially closed for business, and its barber, Doug Shaffer, is finally retiring.
His very last haircut was to a man who just so happened to be Shaffer’s very first haircut.
"He was my first haircut, June 22, 1974,” Shaffer said. “And so then here it's at the end of my career and I'm thinking, ‘my gosh there shouldn't be anything better than having him be my last haircut.’"
When he started cutting hair in the 70s, Shaffer charged $3.75 for a cut.
Doug's Sports Cuts, which Shaffer opened in 1989, has been a staple of Goshen, known to generations of families that come back for a fresh cut.
The shop is chock-full of baseball and sports memorabilia, even the floor is a baseball diamond, with the barber's chair positioned directly at home plate.
To celebrate his decades-long career, Shaffer invited his friends and family to witness his very last haircut before hanging up the clippers for good.
Next, Shaffer and his wife Tina plan to enjoy their retirement traveling the country in their new motorhome.
