Harrison Elementary School receives $20,000 donation from The DICK's Sporting Goods Foundation

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - South Bend's Harrison Elementary School received a $20,000 donation from The DICK's Sporting Goods Foundation Sports Matter program. The school is the first in northwest Indiana to receive the competitive grant.

The grant money will help bring more sports to the west side of South Bend.

Previously, the school was only able to support two sports, said Principal Karla Lee. With this donation, the athletic program can expand to include activities like basketball, cross country, and cheerleading, among a number of other sports.

Students will also not have to pay to participate in an extracurricular sport and will be provided the necessary equipment to play.

Lee believes bringing in additional sports will create avenues for students and families in the Harrison community to connect.

The Sports Matter program was established in 2014 by DICK's and The DICK's Sporting Goods Foundation.

Since then, the program has donated more than $150 million to support young athletes across the country.

A special check presentation ceremony will be held at Harrison at 1:30 p.m. on October 11.
