SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Normally this time of year we'd be talking about the heat increasing as in temperatures outside, but this May we are dealing with the heat increasing inside. This cool snap this late in May is rare and has led to an increased demand for heating. We track heating degree days or HDD. The bigger the number the more heat an average household will use, its based off of the ideal temperature of 65 degrees.
We haven't had this much of a cool snap this late in the year since may 2002, we had 5 straight days with highs below 60 degrees. So far our HDD is at 146, which is the highest number since 2021.
