Historic bridge to be relocated

CENTREVILLE, Mich. -- A historic bridge in St. Joseph County is on the move.

The bridge on M-86 that spans across the Prairie River in Centreville is relocating to Cass County.

The bridge does not meet requirements for M-86.

The state is considering picking it up and moving it to Crystal Springs Street.

Engineers say that the bridge will have to be moved in 20-foot sections.

"It's put together with rivets so think of it as a tinker toy thin they'll take it down to the largest components they can move," said Chief Engineer Joe Bellina.

This is not the first big move for the bridge. It had roots in Detroit before moving to St. Joseph County in 1938.

M-DOT officials hope moving the bridge can preserve it for at least another 50 years.
