Historic houses of worship invited to apply for grants
Indiana Landmarks INDIANAPOLIS -- Historic houses of worship across Indiana facing restoration needs will be able to apply for grants through the Indiana Landmark's Sacred Places Indiana Fund.
In 2015, Indiana Landmarks created the Sacred Places Indiana Program in collaboration with Lilly Endowment Inc. in order to support historic places of worship. In December of 2025, Lilly Endowment Inc. renewed its support for Sacred Places Indiana with a $10 million grant for ongoing programs including expert guidance, training, and financial assistance for historic houses of worship.
“Lilly Endowment’s continued support for Indiana Landmarks’ Sacred Places Indiana program is valuable beyond words,” says David Frederick, director of Sacred Places Indiana. “We’ve already seen the impact that the program is having, not only in terms of support to participating congregations and the historic buildings they steward, but to the communities they serve as well.”
The Sacred Places Indiana Fund awards matching grants to congregations who are committed to good stewardship of their historic structures and have demonstrated signs of organizational health.
Applications for the next round of grant funding are currently open and will continue to be accepted through June 15, 2026.
Congregations can learn more about the program and application process through an online informational webinar on Thursday, Feb. 19 from noon to 1 p.m.; those interested can RSVP here to receive a link to the webinar.
