Hit and run leaves big mess for Water Works crews to clean up

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Water Works crews said someone slammed into a hydrant and then took off.

It happened at the corner of Jefferson Blvd. and S. 30th St. in South Bend, just across the street from Park Jefferson.

Water spewed out of the hydrant and into the street, causing some flooding. Police had the area closed to traffic until crews were able to clear the drains of leaves and other debris.

Crews worked for two and a half hours to clean up the muddy mess left behind, hoping to prevent it from turning to ice.

Water Works crews said they will have to come back next week to replace the hydrant.
