Honor fallen officers with Elkhart PD for National Police Week

ELKHART, Ind. – Elkhart Police Department announced they are holding a memorial for fallen officers on Tuesday, May 15th in honor of National Police Week.

EPD will honor officers who have died protecting and saving others as well as current officers who have done exemplary work.

Police officers of the past that will be honored are:

  • Willard Burton (1888)
  • Oren Shelmadine (1920)
  • Henry Wentz (1924)
  • Douglas Adams (2001)
  • Michael Swygart (2009)

The ceremony will be held at the Elkhart Police/Fire Memorial at the Elkhart Riverwalk and will begin at 12 p.m.

If there is inclement weather, find the festivities at the Marion Street Parking Garage behind the police department.

President John F. Kennedy proclaimed the calendar week of May 15th as National Police Officers Memorial Day in 1962. The week is to honor and recognize law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
