House fire in Granger

GRANGER, Ind. -- Clay Fire responded to a garage fire at home on the 5000 block of Brighton Court in Granger at around 8:00 pm on Monday evening. Fire Marshal David Cherrone says the 4 occupants of the home all got out safely and the fire was contained in about 10 minutes.

Cherrone says the cold temperatures were not a factor for them and the fact that the home had its driveway and walkways shoveled beforehand made for a smooth evening.

"One of the things with weather like this that we always like to remind people of is obviously not only shoveling out where your front door is but shoveling out your back door as well," says Cherrone. "So, in case you can't get out one of those during a fire, you have a second way out."

The scene of the fire was completely cleared by 10:00 pm and salt trucks arrived shortly after that to make sure the left over water from the fire trucks didn't cause for an icy commute in the morning.

The garage and two cars were significantly damaged in the fire. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the home, but the home did suffer smoke damage.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, according to Clay Fire, but the investigation has not been completed.
