SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- With the heat rolling into Michiana, air conditioning units are working on overdrive, causing issues to spring up for many at the same time.
With that in mind, ABC57’s Blake Parker met up with some members of the I&M Heating and Cooling team to hear about ways people can get ahead of possible AC problems.
Founder and head mechanic, Jeff Beyer, said many HVAC companies are booked and busy due to the heat.
“Right now, with this first two weeks of hot, hot weather, everybody’s busy, a lot of companies are two months back, we’re fortunate, we’re only a couple weeks back,” said Beyer.
Beyer said when a compressor, which is an AC unit’s main component found within the large metal box that’s typically outside of a residence, is not running, the humidity is not being removed from the home. However, there are several things you can do to help prevent issues like that and save electricity.
“If there’s not good maintenance on the condenser on the outside it’ll overheat… hose it down all the way around not just the front, all the way around the entire unit to make it clean and that will save a lot of electricity… You can open up your screens and run the fan all night long and that will save electricity on your compressor not being run. Then in the morning when you first get up and you start to go get ready for work, close those screens, bring down your shades, close your curtains, keep the house dark until you get back in the afternoon and then turn on your air conditioner,” said Beyer.
