Hungry patrons in Elkhart line up for Volcano Pizza sandwiches

ELKHART, Ind. — Hundreds of hungry patrons in Elkhart stood in line during Wednesday's hot weather to buy sandwiches from Volcano Pizza.

Volcano Pizza sells its famous Italian sausage sandwich in the Easy Shopping Place parking lot.

The tradition started 35 years ago. Despite Wednesday's hot temperatures, owner Fritz Campanello was happy to serve customers.

"It's worth it to satisfy all these customers here, that's for sure," said Campanello. "It's not the most fun thing in the world to do. We all kind of band together, get this thing done. Make the people of Elkhart happy."

The sausage is an old family recipe. The sandwich also comes on homemade bread with green peppers and onions.

It will be available on Thursday as well.
