UPDATE: I-94 now open between S.R. 249 and Burns Harbor exit 22 following gas leak
PORTAGE, Ind. -- UPDATE: Sgt. Glen Fifield updated on social media at around 8 p.m. the east and westbound lanes of I-94 are back open to public travel. Some ramps still may experience traffic delays, for further information check INDOT website.
ORIGINAL STORY: Sgt. Glen Fifield with the Indiana State Police District #13 reports I-94 between S.R. 249 and Burns Harbor exit 22 is currently closed in both directions due to a gas leak near the Portage, Ind. Bass Pro Shop.
Police say the Portage Fire Department was also on scene. Fifield states the damaged gas line is causing dangerous conditions.
As of 2:10 p.m., the Portage Fire Chief told police NIPSCO informed them it could be at least three hours before the gas leak is secured.
I-94 will remain closed during this time and motorists are asked to use alternate routes and avoid this area.
