Indiana BMV unveils new 'blackout' license plate option, when you can get yours

Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles unveiled the new “blackout” plate option for Hoosier drivers on Monday.

BMV officials say earlier this year, state lawmakers approved the design, and Governor Mike Braun approved it near the end of the 2025 legislative session.

The new plate option will be available Aug. 8 to all drivers registering a passenger car, light truck under 11,000 pounds, motorcycle, or RV.

Disability "blackout" plates will be available later, officials said.

“Hoosiers have spoken, and we have listened. This plate reflects the ongoing interest we've heard from residents and staff,” BMV Commissioner Kevin Garvey said. “People are constantly looking for fun ways to express who they are, and this is one way they can do that.”

Drivers who want to replace their current plate before its expiration with a "blackout" plate must pay a $9.50 replacement plate fee, requiring a visit to a BMV branch representative. The replacement cannot be completed online or at a BMV Connect kiosk.

BMV officials say additional standard fees include a plate fee of $45, and an optional personalized license plate fee of $45

The additional fees are due upon initial registration and all annual renewals.

If you're interested in purchasing a "blackout" plate you may do so online during a new registration or renewal transaction via myBMV.com, at a BMV Connect kiosk during a new registration or renewal, or in person with a representative at any BMV branch.
