Indiana Senate defeats redistricting bill Thursday
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --The redistricting bill (House Bill 1032) was defeated in the Indiana State Senate Thursday. The bill would have created a new congressional map, to make all 9 congressional seats republican, instead of the current 7-2 majority.
The bill passed in the House last week, 57-41. The bill was defeated in the Indiana Senate 31-19.
Here's how local senators voted:

- Blake Doriot (R) - Nay
- David Niezgodski (D) - Nay
- Linda Rogers (R) - Nay
- Sue Glick (R) - Nay
- Ryan Mishler (R) - Nay
- Stacey Donato (R) - Yea
ABC57’s Jordan Tolbert spoke with Linda Rogers (R-Granger) who voted against the redistricting bill.
"My vote reflected what I heard from the people that live in my district. And when I heard from the number of constituents they overwhelmingly were against redistricting,” said Rogers. “When I was elected, I told the folks when I was running that I was going to be their advocate and serve them, and that's what I'm trying to do."
State Sen. Linda Rogers (R-Granger) also made the following statement:
"Today, I joined the majority of my colleagues in voting against redistricting. Over the last few months, I have heard from thousands of constituents who were overwhelmingly opposed. When I chose to run for Senate District 11, I promised to serve and advocate for those in our local community, and I believe I upheld that promise today. I will continue to work on issues affecting all Hoosiers, including education reform and reducing taxes."
Sen. David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) said he’s glad this is over.
"I believed this would be the final outcome, but you never know what's gonna happen until that final moment comes. They said the votes weren't there and we were called to come back to work, we came back to work and even with this--with so many people against it, we still did the role we had in the state senate today in defeating a piece of legislation that did not have hoosier on its name as a bill."
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun releases the following statement:
“I am very disappointed that a small group of misguided State Senators have partnered with Democrats to reject this opportunity to protect Hoosiers with fair maps and to reject the leadership of President Trump. Ultimately, decisions like this carry political consequences. I will be working with the President to challenge these people who do not represent the best interests of Hoosiers.”
