Indiana State Police investigating deadly officer-involved shooting

UPDATE: According to policy, the St. Joseph County Police officer involved in the shooting is on paid administrative leave while Indiana State Police investigate the incident.


ORIGINAL STORY: 

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. -- Indiana State Police is investigating a shooting involving an officer with the Mishawaka Police Department and a Deputy with the St. Joseph County Police Department. 

According to the early investigation, police responded to a shots fired call just after 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning in the 200 block of South Dixie Way in Roseland. 

A St. Joseph County deputy found the suspect vehicle, a Black 2004 Lincoln SUV, in the area and tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver of that vehicle left scene and initiated a pursuit.

The chase continued onto Capital Avenue/Elm Road until the suspect drove the vehicle into a field near Tyler Road (north of Bremen) and ran from the scene. 

Officers located the suspect and shots were fired. 

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and has been identified as 54-year-old, Johnny Lee Wood, of Elkhart, whose family has been notified. 

An autopsy is scheduled at the Marshall County Forensic Center, on Tuesday, December 26, 2023.
