GRANGER, Ind. — An Indiana Toll Road worker is remembered 3 years after his death.
Ron ‘Highway’ Smith was struck and killed by a distracted driver on July 2nd, 2020.
He was a beloved employee of the Indiana Toll Road and the founder of the Warrior’s Oath Veteran’s Motorcycle Club.
Both groups honor their fallen friend each year with a ‘Highway to Higher Education Scholarship Award and Memorial Ride’.
Saturday morning's ride memorializes Ron Smith, helps active-duty Military members and their families and reminds drivers to slow down and respect worker safety in work zones.
This year, 2 of the 3 scholarship winners will take part in the ride.
Registration starts at 10 a.m. at Lake Albert on the Toll Road. Anyone with a motorcycle or car is welcome to join.
The ride begins at 11 a.m., making its first stop at the VFW in Marcellus, and ending at the VFW in Edwardsburg. The scholarships will be given out there, and you can also enjoy food, raffles, music and more!
The fee for riders is $20 and passengers are $10. All proceeds go towards the scholarship awards for next year’s ride.
More info from the NHTSA on work zone deaths and a list of measures to prevent work zone incidents can be found here.
