Inmate attempts suicide at St. Joseph County Jail

An inmate at the St. Joseph County Jail attempted suicide on Sunday around 5 p.m. and was hospitalized, according to the County Metro Homicide Unit.

Correctional officers discovered 31-year-old Charles Miller, of Elkhart, in his cell Sunday afternoon. He had attempted to hang himself, according to CMHU.

Miller was transported to the hospital in serious condition.

Miller had been in custody on a preliminary charge of residential entry from an incident in St. Joseph County on Saturday as well as an outstanding warrant out of Elkhart County.

The CMHU investigates when an inmate dies or is seriously injured while at the county jail.
