IPhone detects crash, first responders save driver's life Monday

Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police Department

EDWARDSBURG, Mich. --  The Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police Department is reporting a single-vehicle crash that left the driver trapped in a vehicle that was engulfed in flames Monday night.

Authorities say an alert came into Cass County Dispatch around 6:28 p.m. on June 23 and the Edwardsburg Police Department was sent, along with fire and ambulance crews, to the area of May Street and Lakeview Drive for an IPhone crash detection.

Crews arrived on scene to find a lone vehicle had run off the road to the left and hit a tree on the south side of the road.

"The vehicle was on fire," the OTEPD said.

"An Officer with OTEPD attempted to put the fire out but was unsuccessful. The officer and an Edwardsburg Ambulance paramedic went to the driver side and were able to extricate the driver Jeffrey Freed, 58 years old, of Edwardsburg. The passenger side of the vehicle was engulfed with flames as Freed was extricated. Freed shoes were on fire as he was pulled from the vehicle."

Fire crews arrived a short time later and "put the fully engulfed vehicle out."

Freed was transported by Edwardsburg Ambulance to a local hospital.

"Emergency personnel saved Freed’s life," the OTEPD said.
