ISP identifies trooper shot Friday morning in Michigan City

ISP: Sgt. Justin Heflin

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana State Police have identified the trooper who suffered multiple gunshot wounds Friday morning in Michigan City as Sgt. Justin Heflin, a 12‑year veteran of ISP, who previously served in the United States Marine Corps.

ISP has also confirmed the suspect's identity as 54-year-old Kevin W. Meyers, of LaPorte.

Meyers was pronounced dead at the final scene of the manhunt by the La Porte County Coroner.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday morning.

ISP reports troopers responded to I-94 around 5:30 a.m., Friday, to assist the Berrien County Sheriff's Office with a stolen vehicle pursuit that crossed into Indiana.

During the pursuit police say Meyers fired multiple rounds from a rifle, aiming the weapon at pursuing officers.

The chase continued onto local roads. Meyers eluded authorities for a time before Heflin located the suspect vehicle, a silver 2019 Ford F‑150, near I‑94 and US 421.

While behind the truck, a collision occurred between the Meyers' truck and Heflin's patrol car.

Police say Meyers then opened fire from inside the truck, striking the patrol vehicle and Heflin multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Troopers loaded Heflin into another police car before taking him to Franciscan Health Michigan City for emergency care.

A large‑scale manhunt for Meyers was then initiated.

Around 9:16 a.m., the Lake County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit located the Ford F‑150 hidden in a tree line in the 7500 block of Joliet Road in La Porte County.

As officers moved in on the area, gunshots were heard coming from the nearby cornfield where Meyers was found dead.

Meyers injuries were consistent with gunshot wounds.

After Heflin received initial treatment in Michigan City, he was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he successfully underwent surgery.

Heflin is said to be in stable condition and is surrounded by his family.
