'It rarely is stranger-on-stranger,' Nimtz Pkwy shots fired a rare case of random violence

SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- South Bend saw multiple, unrelated firearm incidents Tuesday night. In one of those cases, the South Bend Police Department (SBPD) was called to Nimtz Parkway, near Bendix Drive and Old Cleveland Road, just before 9 p.m. for reports of a man shooting at passing vehicles. 

"A person was apparently, randomly just walking around just firing at passing vehicles," said SBPD Chief Scott Ruszkowski.  

Luckily, no one was hurt, and a suspect was quickly detained after officers arrived on scene and matched him with witness descriptions. Evidence and witness testimony was collected, and the investigation is ongoing. He remains in custody Wednesday.

There is no further threat to the public according to SBPD. 

While this shows random crime does happen and can happen to anyone, cases like this remain rare. 

"More often than not, incidents are isolated, and it rarely is stranger-on-stranger," said Capt. Kayla Miller of the SBPD Detective Bureau. "Most often, incidents are known individuals, so, a victim knows the suspect, witnesses, whatever it may be."

SBPD has not yet released the suspect's identity. It's still unclear at this time whether passing vehicles were hit by gunfire.
