NOW: “It’s crazy!” Niles resident reacts to Michiana weather whiplash

NILES, Mich. -- Five days ago, some across Michiana donned short sleeves and shorts and went fishing in local waterways.

On Monday, many had to don winter coats and clear up to ten inches of fresh snow.

Niles resident Melissa Pease was in a state of disbelief.

“It’s crazy,” Pease said when asked about the rapid changes Monday. “I mean, I thought it was over with a few days ago, and now it's definitely not over with.”

It wasn’t just the Niles area that experienced the sudden reemergence of snow. Parts of LaPorte, Elkhart and St. Joseph counties in Indiana experienced more than six inches of fresh snow.

“It's spring, it's over. That about sums it up,” Pease said. “Life will start to get more back to normal, and now we're right back in it.”

The latest round of snow has pushed the total since Dec. 1 to 64 inches in South Bend. This is the first time since 2018 that South Bend has eclipsed the 60-inch winter snowfall threshold.

If you include the snow Michiana received in November, our seasonal snowfall is now more than 90 inches! That’s the most snow since 2014.

Numbers like these have some thinking of warmer weather that’s hopefully sticks around for the long-haul.

“I’m hoping it's going to be a nice spring, Easter. I'm not sure whether that's going to happen,” Pease said.
