Johnnie Johnson unites the community with his at home parking lot during Notre Dame games.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame game days always bring in tons of visitors from all over the place to come see the teams play. With the influx of visitors comes an increased need for parking.
With the only house left on North Eddy Street, Johnnie Johnson is finding a way to unite the community one car at a time. Johson is no stranger to game days as he's been living in this house since the 1980’s watching the town evolve.
Johnson explains, "when I first started doing this, it was like five bucks and people didn't come here because all this was in built up.”
With the Eddy Commons area construction finishing up in 2018, Johson did not want to lose his prime real estate, so now he's the only house left on the street.
Johson works in rain or shine and has hosted a parking place for people for many game days. Pat Murphy, a man who rents Johsons house out during game days says, “It doesn't matter in the rain, he's in the snow, whatever the conditions are. He is a worker.”
Murphy has been coming to Notre Dame for game days since 1972, and now he has the pleasure of giving his family and friends the same experiences he's had. Murphy tells ABC57’s Sidney Moore, “we've come back every year. We love Notre Dame, my son, Michael's here, Sean's here, all the people that are most important to us are here, and we're Johnny Johnson's house, like we always have been for 12 years.”
After spending many years in Johsons home Pat Murphy says he considers Johnnie Johson a great friend of his and that when they come to visit, they are like one big family. Murphy also goes on to say that he never wants to stop visiting this place. Murphy says, “as long as God keeps me on earth. I'm coming back in a wheelchair, in a bed. It doesn't matter.” The starting place for these visits is right at the heart of Johnnie Johsons home.
