La Porte County deputies praised for pulling driver to safety following crash
LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. - Two La Porte County deputies are being praised for the actions they took on Thursday night to help a driver who was trapped in their vehicle following a crash on Monroe Street.
At 10:51 p.m. on Thursday, Deputy Austin Wells responded to a crash in the 3100 block of Monroe Street in which a vehicle had completely entered a residence.
Deputy Wells entered the residence, found the home's occupants had safety gotten out, and learned the vehicle's driver was trapped inside the vehicle.
As Deputy Wells approached the vehicle, he discovered a fire had started underneath the hood and the home was quickly being filled with smoke.
After maneuvering through a large amount of debris and wreckage, Deputy Wells was able to find the injured driver.
Deputy Wells and Deputy John Roby Jr. carried the driver out of the residence and stayed with the driver until La Porte County EMS arrived.
“We are beyond ecstatic by the heroic actions of Deputies Wells and Roby," said Sheriff John T. Boyd. "They sacrificed themselves and fearlessly faced dangers for the sake of others. I publicly commend both deputies and each will later be recognized for their life-saving actions.”
