La Porte teacher receives award after 46 years on the job

One very special teacher in La Porte was honored Thursday for nearly 50 years of service to her school system.

Claudia Williams has been a teacher and librarian at Kelsing Middle School for 46 years.

When they called her name at the new teacher's banquet, Williams said she couldn't believe it.

"I thought, 'well I've never won anything so it really can't be me,'" Williams said.

Williams was given a heroes award by Homes for Heroes after being nominated by her peers.

"We all have that person we can look back on and say, 'wow, if it wasn't for this teacher believing in me or if it wasn't for this one teacher who said this one thing to me, then I wouldn't be where I am," Dee Dee Wood of Homes for Heroes said.

Williams was just happy to accept the recognition.

She has no plans of retiring any time soon, and says she can't wait for the new school year.

"I'm excited to put out all the new books and have the kids get excited over the new materials," Williams said.
