LaGrange County police arrest suspect in fatal hit and run crash

LAGRANGE CO., Ind. -- One man is dead and another is behind bars after a deadly hit and run crash in LaGrange County.

The LaGrange County Sheriff's Department said that 28-year-old Zane Edward Scott hit and killed a bicyclist in the Topeka area on Thursday.

It happened near 4685 W. 700 S. The victim was identified as Wilmer L. Herschberger.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the Herschberger had died from his injuries.

Officers were told that the driver of the car had not stopped to help him or call for help.

Police investigated and found out that both Herschberger and Scott were heading west on County Road 700 South, about one mile away from Topeka.

Officers fanned out and did a sweep of local Topeka factories. They found a vehicle matching a witness' description: a blue van showing damage consistent with the crash.

Police went into the man's place of employment and arrested him.

He was booked on charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and reckless homicide.
