BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Lake Michigan College athletics has been named the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Academic School of the Year.
College officials say that five of the schools' seven athletic programs finished with a combined GPA of 3.0 or higher, qualifying each of them for the MCCAA All-Academic teams.
The Red Hawks’ women’s soccer program claimed the highest total, with a combined GPA of 3.46.
Campus Life and Athletics Director Melissa Grau emphasized that academics Is the top priority for all student-athletes.
“I always tell our student athletes 'paper makes paper', and so in order for them to participate here, they’ve got to get a degree, and we strive for academic excellence,” said Grau.
In total, 53 student-athletes were awarded 2021-2022 MCCAA Academic All-Conference honors.
